How it works engine

An engine is a machine that converts different types of energy into power. The most common type of engine employed in cars today is called an internal combustion engine (ICE). It works by combusting a combination of air and fuel in its cylinders, which generates energy that is used to move the pistons that ultimately turn a crankshaft, creating the power necessary to move the car. The process of internal combustion starts when the car's computerized control unit injects fuel into the cylinders. At precisely timed intervals, an electronic spark plug ignites the mixture and rapidly increases pressure within the cylinder. This pressure pushes against the top of the piston, forcing it downward, while simultaneously spinning its attached crankshaft. As it continues downwards, a mixture of air and fuel is drawn in through intake valves, while exhaust valves open up on their upstroke to expel burned gases from within. This cycle repeats continuously until more power isn't needed or the driver shuts off the vehicle.

One way that modern automakers have worked to improve efficiency is by synthesizing materials for various components and changing their chip programming for different variables such as fuel injection and temperature. Generally speaking, modern engines are designed with adjustable camshafts capable of tuning how air and fuel mix as well as how much gets injected into each cylinder at any given time. Additionally, automated engine tuning allows cars to adapt to changing driving conditions for optimized performance over various conditions – be it hot or cold weather or mountain drives vs highway cruising – thereby maximising efficiency at all times.
